Minister Anandasangaree Visited Sturgeon Lake to Announce Historic “Cows and Plows” Settlement

Today, on October 15, 2024, Sturgeon Lake First Nation welcomed the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, for a historic announcement.

The Minister confirmed the settlement of the Agricultural Benefits claim under Treaty 6, commonly known as the “Cows and Plows” claim, marking an important step in addressing Canada’s failure to provide the farming equipment, seeds, and livestock promised under Treaty.

The settlement is a significant moment for Sturgeon Lake First Nation, recognizing the generations of hardship endured due to these broken promises.

“For generations, our community has carried the weight of broken promises. But today, I stand here, proud and grateful, knowing that our ancestors’ sacrifices were not in vain. This settlement is a symbol of justice, dignity, and renewal for our people,” said Chief Christine Longjohn.

The event included a tour of the school, a special presentation, and a gathering with Elders and community members at the Band Hall. Sturgeon Lake First Nation is grateful to Minister Anandasangaree for his support and is committed to continuing the journey of reconciliation.
