Elders’ Annual Trip 2024

Whale Watching Tour & Kamloops Indian Residential School Visit 🚌 🐋 🧡

Oct 4, 2024/inUpdates

From September 22-30, our Elders, staff, and helpers travelled to Vancouver for the annual Elders’ Trip. It was an incredible week filled with new experiences, reflection, and connection.

On September 26, the group set out on a thrilling Whale Watching Tour in the Salish Sea. For many, it was their first time seeing humpback whales and sea lions up close in the wild. Whether enjoying the view from the heated cabin or stepping out onto the open deck, it was a memorable adventure that brought everyone closer together.

The next day, September 27, the Elders made a meaningful stop at the Kamloops Indian Residential School. They joined around 20 other groups that day to pay their respects to the survivors and remember those who never made it back home. It was a deeply emotional experience, especially for those who had attended residential schools themselves. Even though it was a heavy day, they showed incredible courage and supported one another. It was a reminder of how far we’ve come as a community and why it’s so important to keep telling our stories.

These trips are more than just a change of scenery for our Elders— they’re a way to show that we value their wisdom, resilience, and contributions to our community. As the keepers of our language, culture, and traditions, they play a central role for our Nation, and providing them with these opportunities to connect, relax, and create new memories is one way we can show our appreciation and support their well-being. We are grateful for them, and thankful to the amazing staff and helpers who made this trip possible.
